Kinnock on research

Neil Kinnock unveiled the next step in the Labour party鈥檚 science thinking
in a speech in Birmingham last week. Under a Labour government, research
by industry would be encouraged by a system of tax credits. Technology Trusts
would be set up to support research by small companies, and research in
higher education would be adequately funded.

Kinnock accused the government of turning its back on science, claiming
it had been 鈥榩ossessed by the idea that the market unaided can look after

For every 拢1 spent on research in Britain, 拢1.50 is spent
in Italy, 拢2 in France and 拢2.35 in Germany, he said.
