Patents: Agents of success

Patent agents, like lawyers, are usually coy about how much they earn
from fighting other people鈥檚 legal battles. But the Chartered Institute
of Patent Agents recently published a survey which shows that two-thirds
of Britain鈥檚 patent agents are doing more work than a year ago. 鈥楻ecession
鈥 what recession?鈥 asks the CIPA.

Patent agents with between 7 and 10 years in the profession earn over
拢40,000 a year and those with more than 30 years鈥 experience earn
over 拢70,000.

The bad news is that most of the work British agents are doing now comes
from the US and Japan, because of the recessed state of British industry.
The survey also shows that despite talk of equality, patent agencies still
pay their female staff less than their male staff.
