The British Standards Institution launched an attack this week on the
European Commission over its Green Paper on European standardisation. The
BSI says that there are 鈥榮erious shortcomings鈥� in the present organisation,
including the role of the Commission.
The BSI has called for an independent appraisal of the commission鈥檚
management of the drafting of European standards, to be carried out by a
firm of consultants.
The drafting of industrial standards is voluntary and is driven by consensus
until strong standards are formed, says Ivan Dunstan, director-general of
the BSI. Drafting international standards is a slow and laborious process,
however, and there is a great need to speed this up while maintaining the
good points of the process.
