El Nino warning

The Pacific Ocean is warming up, which could mean that an El Nino is
on its way, according to researchers at the Climate Analysis Center in Washington.
鈥業f this evolves as in past episodes we would expect the event to take off
in December and continue for a whole year,鈥 said Vernon Kouski.

The El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) happens once every two to seven
years. The warming up of the centre of the Pacific generates more cloud,
and sets off a new pattern of weather around the Pacific basin.

It causes unseasonal rains in South America and the southeast of the
US, and drier weather in Australia and Southeast Asia.

Last month鈥檚 sea surface temperature in the central Pacific was 30 掳C,
1.5 掳C higher than the average October level.
