Manchester’s best

A MANCHESTER schoolboy has won the accolade of being the world鈥檚 brightest
young physicist. Alexander Barnett, 18, from Manchester Grammar School beat
off a challenge from young physicists from 33 countries to win the 1990
International Physics Olympiad.

Alexander was chosen with four other students from an initial entry
of 30 000 pupils to represent Britain in the Olympiad for pre-university
students. This year鈥檚 event was held in the Netherlands, where the 165 contestants
sat two five-hour exams, one theoretical and one practical. As well as holding
the title of Olympic champion, Alexander can contemplate the theory of relativity
while listening to his other prize 鈥 a 鈥榞hetto blaster鈥.
