MONGOLIA’s principal newspaper, Unen (Truth), has called for the cancellation
of the degree of doctor of science conferred on the former leader, Yumjaagiin
Tsedenbal. The degree was granted, the newspaper said, not by any academic
body, but by the Mongolian People’s Revolutionary Party.

Unen accuses Tsedenbal of ‘pseudo scientific activity’, contrary to
Marxist-Leninist theory, and the promotion of ‘Stalinist’ phenomena, including
the ‘cult of the personality’. Unen’s stand won the approval of Moscow Radio,
which observed that ‘the process of democratisation is proceeding as rapidly
in Mongolia as in Eastern Europe’.
