HOW do you tell if urine is infected?
Simple, according to researchers at Guy鈥檚 Hospital, London: just look
at it. Urine-testing is one of the commonest diagnostic investigations,
and a quick look could save a hospital such as Guy鈥檚 more than Pounds sterling
100,000.
Paediatricians and bacteriologists came to this conclusion after examining
376 samples from children aged 6 weeks to 17 years from outpatient departments
at the hospital. Their conclusion, published last week in The Lancet, is
that 鈥榠f the urine is examined by the clinician shortly after it has been
passed and is found to be crystal clear . . . it is not infected and culture
is not necessary鈥�. Of 288 clear samples, just two were infected.
