SCIENCE journalists from the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe returned
this week from their first free and open discussions with their Western
counterparts. At the end of a meeting in Krems, Austria, they issued a joint
declaration emphasising that freedom of knowledge and research was 鈥榓 prerequisite
for the solution of problems facing humankind鈥.
The journalists, from 21 of Europe鈥檚 26 countries, agreed that science
writing had taken on 鈥榓 new significance鈥 in the light of profound political
and social change in Europe. They called for greater cooperation including
the establishment of a European Science Journalists鈥 Academy.
