Hawke’s victim

BARRY JONES, Australia鈥檚 Minister for Science since Bob Hawke鈥檚 Labor
Party won power in 1983, lost his job this week in a ministerial reshuffle
following the party鈥檚 narrow election victory on 24 March. His successor,
Simon Crean, is tipped for rapid elevation to the Cabinet, so his stay as
science minister may be brief.

Jones was reportedly 鈥榲ery disappointed鈥 at being dropped from his post.
He is credited with putting science on the political agenda after describing
Australian scientists as 鈥榳imps鈥. He lost office through factional jostling
after Hawke demanded new talent for the ministry.
