SAO Paulo University in Brazil and the East German firm Carl Zeiss (Jena)
have announced the start of work on what they claim will be ‘the largest
telescope in the world’. Construction work, on La Silla mountain in Chile,
is to begin during the first half of this month, and is expected to take
four years.

A report on Chilean national radio claimed that because the telescope
will be operated by remote control, ‘operating costs will be cut by half’.
