POLISH science is facing 鈥榥ot a crisis but a cataclysm鈥, according to
Robert Glebocki, the head of Solidarity鈥檚 All-Poland Coordinating Commission
for Science. Spending on science is due to rise by 183 per cent this year,
but inflation means that this will represent a cut by almost a half in real
terms. There is no money for publishing scientific periodicals, and as a
result of reorganisation, there is a threat of the 鈥榗haotic self-liquidation鈥
of many research groups and institutes.
