Robots are machines capable of carrying out physical tasks. They can be directly controlled by humans, or have some ability to operate by themselves, but the independent intelligent machines seen in science fiction are still a long way off. The word 鈥渞obot鈥 was coined by the Czech writer Karel 膶apek in a 1920 play called Rossum鈥檚 Universal Robots, and is derived from the Czech robota, meaning 鈥渄rudgery鈥 or 鈥渟ervitude鈥. Jacob Aron
